Artist Alley Booth Layouts: From Half Table to Corner Stand

Artist Alley Booth Layouts: From Half Table to Corner Stand

Table of Contents

Every table is a different shape, and every layout question starts the same way: what are you actually working with? A half table tucked into a corner needs a completely different setup than a full 6ft table with a wall behind it. Here's how to think about it by table type, not just by "what looks cool on Instagram."

Start with the table, not the display

It's tempting to buy a display kit first and figure out the layout later. Do it backwards. Measure your actual table (most cons hand you 180cm/6ft, some give you a 90cm/3ft half table, some are just a card table you brought yourself), then build up from there. A display that looks incredible on a 6ft table can eat half a half table and leave you with nowhere to put your card reader.

    Half tables (90cm / 3ft)

Half tables are the toughest real estate in the room. You've got maybe 60-70cm of usable width once you account for your own elbow room, so vertical is non-negotiable. Stack your display up, not out. A compact kit like Core (24 panels, single colour, from $549) or the smaller end of Shapeshift Base works well here because you're not trying to fill width you don't have. Keep your best sellers at eye level in a single tight grid, put prints or smaller items in a shallow tray at the front edge, and resist the urge to add a second riser tier unless you've actually dry-run it at home first.

    Full tables (180cm / 6ft)

This is the sweet spot for most artists and where Shapeshift Base (46 panels, from $699) or Duo (70 panels, $949) really earns its keep. You've got enough width to run a back wall of panels for prints and originals, plus a lower shelf or riser section in front for stickers, keychains, whatever your small stuff is. The mistake people make on a full table is spreading everything out flat because there's finally room to. Don't. Flat tables read as "browse if you want" from six feet away; a vertical back wall reads as "come look at this" from across the aisle.

    Corner and endcap spots

If you've ever scored a corner table, you know it's a mixed blessing. Extra visibility from two directions, but also two sides to dress instead of one. Treat it like two half-displays that meet at the corner rather than one continuous wall, and think about your foot traffic sightline first. Whichever direction has more people walking past should get your strongest banner or top-selling print, since that's the side that decides whether someone stops. A taller kit like Duo Max (92 panels, $1,399) handles a corner well because it can build out in both directions from one connector system instead of needing two separate setups awkwardly taped together.

Height still matters more than most people think

A flat table is basically invisible in a crowded hall. People are scanning at eye level while they walk, not looking down at a tablecloth. Getting even one tier of vertical height, a riser, a tiered stand, a small panel wall, changes whether someone's eyes catch your booth at all. Most conventions cap booth height around 175cm (about 5 panels), but always check your specific event's rules before you build your layout around a number you assumed.

A quick layout checklist by table size

Table type Usable width Layout priority Panel count that fits comfortably
Half table (90cm) ~60-70cm Vertical stack, single focal grid 24-46
Full table (180cm) ~150-160cm Back wall + front riser tier 46-70
Corner/endcap Two open sides Split focus by traffic direction 70-92
Double table (360cm) ~330-340cm Full booth, multiple zones 92+

None of this replaces actually standing at your table before doors open and walking away from it to see what a stranger sees. Do that every single time, even at a venue you've done before, because tables move, lighting changes, and the booth next to you might block a sightline you had last year. Fifteen minutes of walking your own aisle before the show opens catches more layout problems than any amount of planning at home.
