Comfortable Shoes, Seating and Other Booth Survival Gear

Table of Contents

Nobody warns you how much a con is a full-body event until you're limping to your car at the end of day one wondering why your feet feel like they belong to someone else. Standing on convention center concrete for eight-plus hours does real damage, and most of the gear that actually helps isn't glamorous. It's the boring stuff that makes the difference.

Shoes: comfortable isn't the same as good for standing

A shoe that feels fine for walking around all day can still be wrong for standing still in one spot for hours, which is a different kind of strain on your feet. Look for actual arch support and cushioning made for standing, not just "comfortable sneakers." If you've got shoes you already know are good for long shifts on your feet from another job, those are probably your best bet, better than con-specific shopping for something new and untested the week before.

Break in any new shoes well before the show. Con day one is not the day to find out a new pair rubs wrong at hour three.

    Seating you'll actually use

A lot of artists bring a stool and then never sit on it because standing "looks more professional" or more available to customers. That's mostly in your head. A stool at the right height, one that lets you half-stand and greet someone without fully getting up, gets used a lot more than a low chair that takes effort to get out of. Look for something compact enough to fit behind your table without eating your legroom, since space back there is already tight.

    • A stool with a back rest if you can fit one, full chairs sap more energy to get up from repeatedly.
    • Height that lets you greet customers without a big production of standing up.
    • Foldable or lightweight if you're already hauling panels, boxes, and inventory.

The small stuff that adds up

Compression socks are one of those things that sound like a stretch until you actually try them for a full con day and feel the difference by the afternoon. An anti-fatigue mat under your standing spot helps if the venue floor is bare concrete, which a lot of convention centers are. And a second pair of shoes for day two of a multi-day show matters more than people expect, since feet swell over a long weekend and yesterday's shoes might feel tighter today.

    Booth survival gear checklist

    Item Why it matters
Broken-in supportive shoes Standing strain is different from walking strain
Compression socks Reduces swelling and leg fatigue over a long day
Stool with back support You'll actually sit if it's easy to get up from
Anti-fatigue mat Cushions concrete venue floors
Painkillers and blister plasters Cheap insurance for the inevitable
Layers (cardigan, light jacket) Convention halls run cold, especially near AC vents

Your table setup affects your body too

It's not just what you wear, it's how your table's arranged. Reaching over a cluttered table all day to hand things to customers, or crouching down to grab stock from boxes under the table, adds up the same way bad shoes do. Keeping your most-reached items at a height you don't have to bend for, and leaving yourself actual legroom behind the table instead of stacking boxes where your feet go, saves you a surprising number of small movements repeated hundreds of times a day.

If you're running a taller panel setup, like a Base or Duo kit, that height also gives you more usable shelf space at a reasonable reach instead of everything living low on the table surface, which is one less thing your back has to deal with by hour six.

None of this is exciting gear. It's socks and a stool and a mat. But it's the difference between walking normally to your car after a show and doing the con-vendor shuffle everyone recognizes.
