Core vs Shapeshift Base: When the Smaller Kit Is the Smarter Buy

Every few weeks someone messages us asking which kit they should buy, and half the time the honest answer is "the cheaper one." Not because we don't want to sell the bigger kit. Because a lot of vendors buy way more booth than they need for the table they're actually working.

Here's the actual difference. Core is 24 square panels in one colour, starting at $549. Shapeshift Base steps up to 46 multi-shape panels (squares, half-squares, hinge pieces, triangles, wire-grid inserts) in 15 colours, from $699. That's not a huge price gap for what looks like a big spec jump on paper. So when does the smaller kit win?

When Core is the smarter buy

If you're working a half table or a low counter space, 24 panels is genuinely plenty. A lot of new vendors get talked into buying the biggest kit "for future growth" and then spend their first three cons using a third of it, because they don't have the table footprint to build any taller or wider than a basic grid wall.

Core is also the better call if you're still figuring out your product line. You don't need a triangle panel and a hinge piece if you're only hanging 8.5x11 prints in plastic sleeves. Square panels do that job fine, and Core gives you a clean, repeatable grid without paying for shapes you won't use yet.

Budget matters too, but it's worth saying plainly: $549 vs $699 isn't the gap that should decide this for most people. Table size is. A single 6ft table filled edge to edge with a proper vertical wall eats panels fast, and Core can run short there.

When Base earns the extra panels

Base's multi-shape panels change what you can physically build, not just how much of it. Half-squares let you break up a grid instead of stacking everything in even rows. Hinge-square panels let a wall angle instead of running dead flat, which matters if you're on a corner or want your display visible from two aisles instead of one. Triangles fill gaps a square never will.

If you're running a full 6ft table, or you want any height beyond a flat one-row wall, Base's extra panels stop being "nice to have" and start being the difference between a wall that looks intentional and one that looks like you ran out of pieces halfway through setup.

Quick comparison

Neither kit is the "starter" version of the other. They're built for different table setups. If you can honestly say you'll fill a full 6ft table and want more than a flat grid, Base is worth it. If you're working smaller, or you're not sure yet what your table will look like in six months, Core will do the job without you paying for panels that sit in the tote all layout without you paying for panels that sit in the tote all weekend.

You can also start with Core and add on later. It's frosted polypropylene and ABS connectors either way, so the panels aren't disposable if your booth grows, but that's a separate decision from which one to buy first.
