Pins, charms, and keychains are the trickiest category on a table because they're small, numerous, and customers want to touch every single one before deciding. Do this well and it's your highest-margin, easiest-to-restock category. Do it badly and it's a tangled pile nobody wants to dig through.
The core problem: too many small things, too little clarity
Unlike a print, where one design is one object, a pin lineup might be thirty designs across five backing card styles, plus loose charms, plus keychains that all look similar from a distance. If a customer can't scan your pin display in about five seconds and get a sense of what's there, most will move on rather than commit to digging.
The fix isn't fewer pins, it's better organization. Group by theme, series, or color rather than just filling a board left to right as new stock arrives.
Ways to actually display them
- Pin boards or foam board walls, angled slightly toward the customer, not flat against a backdrop
- Grid-style hanging systems where each pin gets its own visible slot instead of overlapping backing cards
- Keychains hung from a horizontal bar or a row of hooks so each one dangles free and visible, not piled in a bowl
- Charms in small labeled trays or bins if they're loose, grouped by theme so browsing feels intentional
- A "new" or "bestseller" section near the front, people gravitate to it almost on instinct
Height and reach matter more here than anywhere else
Pins and charms are impulse buys, and impulse buys happen at hand height, roughly 90-120cm off the ground. If your best pins are up near eye level where people look but don't reach, or down near the table surface where people don't want to lean over, you're losing sales to bad placement, not bad art.
A modular panel wall with hook points built in makes this easier to control than a flat pin board, since you can position your densest, most-touched section exactly where hands naturally land, rather than wherever the board happened to fit against your table.
Bagging and backing cards
However you display pins, the actual product should be bagged individually, both for hygiene reasons and because a bagged pin on a backing card looks more finished and less like a loose item someone already handled. Keychains benefit from a small hang tag with your shop name, since they're the item most likely to travel away from your table into someone else's bag and be seen by a stranger later.
Don't let restocking wreck your layout
A common mistake: you sell out of a popular pin mid-day, and instead of consolidating the empty slot, you leave a gap or shove in a random replacement that breaks the visual grouping. Keep backstock organized by the same categories as your display, so restocking takes ten seconds and doesn't turn your neat grid into a mismatched patchwork by 3pm.
A simple pin/charm/keychain display checklist
| Element | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Grouped by theme/series | Lets customers scan quickly instead of digging |
| Placed at hand height | Impulse buys happen where hands land, not eye level |
| Individually bagged | Hygiene, and it looks more finished |
| Bestsellers up front | Removes friction for undecided browsers |
| Organized backstock | Fast restocking without breaking your layout |
A lot of alley veterans say pins are the category that teaches you the most about your own customers, since the sales pattern for which designs move tells you more than any survey ever will. Pay attention to what people pick up and put back versus what they actually buy. That's better market research than anything you'll find in a blog post, including this one.
