How to Make Your Booth Stand Out in a Packed Artist Alley

How to Make Your Booth Stand Out in a Packed Artist Alley

Table of Contents

Picture the worst version of artist alley: a hundred tables deep, aisles so packed you're shuffling more than walking, and every table looks like a slightly different flavor of the same setup. Standing out in that isn't about being the loudest table, it's about removing the reasons someone walks past without stopping. A lot of experienced alley vendors say the same handful of things over and over, so let's go through them.

    Do: build up, not out

This is the one piece of advice that shows up in almost every "what I wish I knew" recap from vendors who've done dozens of cons. A flat table gets skipped. A vertical display gets seen from further away, which means more people register you exist before they're even close enough to hear your pitch. If you take one thing from this post, it's this.

Don't: make people guess what you sell

You have about two seconds of someone's attention while they walk past. If your banner, your table, and your display don't communicate "this is what I make" almost instantly, most people won't stop to figure it out, even if they'd love your work. Big readable text, your actual product visible and not buried, a name that's easy to spot from a few tables away.

    More DOs

    • Have a catalog (physical binder or a tablet/QR code) if your full range doesn't fit on the table, people assume you don't have something if they can't see it
    • Put your bestsellers at the front, not hidden behind newer or less-proven work
    • Vary your table's height with risers, shelves, or a display wall, not a flat plane
    • Keep a small stock of always-available basics (stickers, small prints) as an easy entry point for undecided browsers
    • Cross-promote with a neighbor, a stamp rally or a shared discount is genuinely low-effort and works

    More DON'Ts

    • Don't leave gaps in your display when something sells out, it reads as messy and unintentional
    • Don't rely purely on your art being "good enough" to sell itself, presentation earns the stop, art earns the sale
    • Don't skip pricing, "ask for price" is friction most browsers won't push through
    • Don't crowd your table edge to edge with zero visual breathing room
    • Don't copy someone else's exact table concept, differentiation is the whole point here

The nervous energy is normal, do it anyway

A lot of vendors, especially first-timers, spend more energy worrying about whether their table is good enough than actually building it. At some point the only way through the nerves is to apply, build the table, show up, and adjust after. You'll learn more from one real event than from months of second-guessing a layout that hasn't been tested yet.

Standing out is mostly about removing friction

Every DO on this list is really the same idea from a different angle: make it easy for someone to understand what you sell, easy to see it from a distance, easy to buy it once they've stopped. None of it requires being the flashiest table in the room. A well-lit, well-organized, vertically-built table with clear pricing will consistently outperform a chaotic one with objectively better art, and that's not a fun thing to admit but it's true.

    Quick reference

    Do Instead of
Vertical display at eye level Flat table surface only
Clear pricing visible Making people ask
Bestsellers up front Burying them behind new stock
A catalog for overflow stock Assuming people will ask what else you have
Cross-promoting with neighbors Treating every table as competition

If your current backdrop is the thing holding your layout flat (a table skirt and nothing else, say), that's usually the highest-leverage fix. Even a smaller kit like Core gives you a vertical wall to work with instead of a bare table, and that alone changes how many people actually see you exist in a packed hall.
