Tall vs Low Booth: Which Sells More at a Crowded Con?

Tall vs Low Booth: Which Sells More at a Crowded Con?

Table of Contents

You've probably heard some version of "get a taller display" as artist alley advice a hundred times. It's not wrong, but it's not the whole story either. Tall displays win in some rooms and do nothing for you in others. Here's the actual trade-off.

Why tall wins in a crowded hall

In a packed convention aisle, people are walking, not browsing. Their eyes are scanning at roughly head height because that's where they're looking to avoid bumping into other attendees, not down at tables. A flat table setup, even a gorgeous one, is competing with the floor for attention it's not going to get. A vertical display puts your best print or your banner in the actual sightline of someone walking past at a normal pace. That's the whole argument for height, and in a dense, high-traffic con it's a strong one.

There's a second reason tall works in crowds: it survives being blocked. When three people are standing at the booth next to you, a flat table disappears completely. A display that's still visible above shoulder height doesn't.

Where low tables still make sense

Not every event is a shoulder-to-shoulder convention floor. Small markets, slower craft fairs, or venues with wide aisles and lighter foot traffic change the math. When people are actually browsing at a relaxed pace instead of being swept along by a crowd, a lower, more open table can feel more approachable, less like a wall between you and the customer. Some artists deliberately go lower and more open at markets specifically because it invites people to linger and pick things up, which matters more than being seen from far away when the room isn't packed to begin with.

Height also has real costs. It's more to pack, more to set up, and it can make your booth feel closed off if you build a wall too close to the front edge of the table. The goal is a display people can see over the crowd, not a fortress.

So which one actually sells more?

Honestly, it depends more on the event than most advice admits. For a packed anime convention or comic con with tens of thousands of attendees moving through narrow aisles, height is doing real work for you before anyone even reaches your table. For a smaller local market with 200 attendees strolling past over four hours, an inviting, low, open table can outperform a tall wall that reads as intimidating or closed off. A lot of alley veterans say they run two different setups for these two situations, and it's not overkill, it's matching the display to the room.

    A practical middle ground

If you only want to own one setup, build for height but keep the front third of your table open and low. Vertical panels toward the back for visibility from a distance, an inviting low shelf or tray right at the front edge where people are already standing. This is basically how Shapeshift Duo (70 panels, $949) gets used in practice, since its build height runs 105-175cm, tall enough to read from an aisle but adjustable enough to bring down for a smaller room.

Venue type Foot traffic Better bet Why
Large convention Dense, fast-moving Tall Visible above the crowd, survives being blocked
Local market/fair Light, relaxed browsing Low and open Feels approachable, invites people to stop
Mixed/unsure Varies by hour Tall back, low front Covers both without two separate kits

Whatever you pick, test it before the show if you can. Set the display up at home, stand ten feet away, and be honest about whether it actually draws your eye or just looks nice up close. Those are two very different things, and only one of them sells prints.
