Buying your whole "dream booth" on day one is a great way to spend money on panels you won't use for a year. A lot of vendors we talk to do the opposite instead, start smaller than feels ambitious, and add on once they actually know what their setup needs. It's a slower path but it's a smarter one, and it's genuinely how a modular system is supposed to work.
Start with what this year's tables actually need
Before you buy anything, look at your actual confirmed tables for the next few months, not your hoped-for lineup for next year. If you're working half tables and low counters right now, there's no upside in owning panels sized for a full 6ft wall you're not renting yet. Buy for the tables in front of you.
This is also the point where it's worth being honest about your product line. If you're mostly flat items (prints, stickers, small merch) a straightforward grid of square panels covers most of what you need. You don't need hinge pieces and triangles yet if you haven't hit a layout problem only those shapes solve.
Add on when you hit an actual wall, not a hypothetical one
The signal to upgrade isn't "I could probably use more panels." It's a specific problem: you landed a bigger table and your current wall doesn't cover it, or you keep wanting to angle a corner and don't have the hinge panels to do it, or you want a second colour worked into your display and your current kit is single-tone only. Real, specific constraints are a much better reason to spend money than a vague sense that bigger is better.
Because the panel and connector system is shared across tiers, going from Core up to Shapeshift Base, or from Base up toward a two-tone Duo setup, means what you already own keeps being useful. You're building on top of a kit, not replacing one.
A realistic upgrade path
- Start with Core (24 panels) for half tables and counters while you're finding your footing.
- Move to Shapeshift Base (46 panels, from $699) once you're regularly working full 6ft tables or want angled layouts instead of a flat grid.
- Add a second colour and step up to Duo (70 panels, $949) when you want a two-tone wall or you're consistently doing tall builds up to 175cm.
- Go to Duo Max (92 panels, $1,399) only once corners, double tables, or full walk-in booths are a regular part of your con calendar, not a one-off.
You don't have to hit every step. Plenty of vendors land on Base and stay there for years because it matches their table size and never stops matching it. The point isn't to climb the ladder, it's to only spend the next rung's worth of money when the current rung is actually holding you back.
What this saves you beyond money
Buying gradually also means you're not hauling panels you don't use. Every extra panel is extra weight in a tote, extra time in your setup, extra stuff to keep track of at teardown when you're tired and just want to get to the hotel. A kit sized to what you're actually doing this season is lighter in every sense, not just cheaper.
If you do end up overbuying at some point, the panels don't lose their usefulness sitting in storage. But there's no real reason to front-load that cost when the whole design of a modular system is built around adding as you go.
