What We'd Tell Our First-Year Vendor Selves About Displays

If we could go back to our very first market setup and whisper advice to ourselves while struggling with a wobbly card stand and a tablecloth that would not stay straight, here is what we would say.

Stop Buying Cheap Display Pieces

That $12 wire rack is going to break at your third show. The acrylic stands will yellow by summer. The business card holder will snap in transit. We spent more replacing cheap pieces in our first year than we would have spent buying one proper display system from the start. A modular display kit pays for itself before your fifth show.

You Do Not Need Everything On Day One

We brought our entire inventory to our first show. ALL of it. Half stayed in boxes under the table because there was no room. The other half was crammed so tight that nothing looked good. Bring your best twenty products. Display them beautifully. Leave the rest at home.

Your Neighbour Is Not Your Competition

We spent our first few shows comparing our setup to the vendor next to us and feeling terrible about it. Here is the truth: customers do not compare you to your neighbour. They compare you to "worth stopping for" or "keep walking." Meet that bar and the neighbour does not matter.

Speed Is A Skill Worth Practising

We practised our art for years. We practised our setup zero times. And then we wondered why setup morning was pure chaos. Practise setting up at home twice before your first show. Time yourself. Our future selves would have been done in twenty minutes instead of fumbling for SIXTY.

Take A Photo After Every Show

We did not start doing this until show number eight. We wish we had started at show one. Every photo is a lesson. Every comparison between "then" and "now" shows growth you cannot see in the moment. Your setup at show twenty will look nothing like show one, and you will want that proof.
