Convention bags get a harder workout than daily carry bags. You're on your feet for 8 to 10 hours, moving through crowds, bending over tables, putting the bag down and picking it up dozens of times. The bag needs to survive that without your pins falling off, your stuff getting soaked if the venue has outdoor sections, or your shoulders giving out by 2pm.
Here's what separates a bag that works at cons from one that just looks good in photos.
It needs to carry more than pins
A convention day means water, snacks, your phone, a portable charger, your wallet, maybe a Switch or a tablet for queue downtime. If you're a vendor, add your float, business cards, spare stock, and a change of shirt. If the bag can only hold pins and nothing else, you're carrying two bags. Nobody wants to wrangle two bags through a crowded artist alley.
Look for internal pockets with some organisation. A laptop sleeve doubles as a tablet holder. Side pockets for a water bottle. A zippered pocket for your wallet and phone. These sound basic, but a lot of display bags treat internal storage as an afterthought.
The straps need padding
This is the most common complaint we hear from people who bought cheap ita bags for cons. Thin straps with no padding are fine for a 15 minute trip to the shops. After four hours at a convention with a loaded bag, they cut into your shoulders.
Our bags have padded shoulder straps across the entire range. The 17 inch backpack also has a sternum strap to distribute weight across your chest rather than pulling entirely on your shoulders. If you're carrying the bag for a full convention day, that sternum strap matters more than you think.
Multi-way carry saves you
Standing in a panel for an hour is different from walking the floor. Waiting in a queue is different from sitting at a vendor table. A bag that only works as a backpack is fine for some of those situations and awkward for others.
Our 17 inch bag converts between backpack, crossbody, shoulder, and tote. You wear it as a backpack while walking the floor, switch to crossbody when you're browsing tables (so the display faces forward and people can see your pins), and carry it as a tote when you're sitting down at a panel.
The 15 inch Shapeshift does three modes: backpack, crossbody, and laptop bag. The straps tuck away when you switch so there's nothing dangling.
Weather resistance is not optional
Conventions happen in all weather. Sydney cons have outdoor sections. Melbourne con queues happen on the street. If it rains and your bag soaks through, your pins get wet, your electronics get wet, and your day gets worse.
Waterproof fabric with sealed zippers is what you need. Water-resistant means the outer fabric shrugs off light rain but the seams and zippers are still open. Fully waterproof means everything is sealed.
The display window needs to face forward
This sounds obvious, but some bags position the window on a panel that faces your back when you're wearing it as a backpack. The whole point of wearing pins to a con is that other people see them. Your display should face outward in whatever carry mode you're using most.
When you switch to crossbody, the bag rotates to your front or side, and the window should still face outward. Check this before you buy. Some bags only display correctly in one carry position.
D-rings and attachment points
Cons are where charms, keychains, plushie clips, and lanyards come out. D-rings on the outside of the bag let you clip things on without opening the display window. D-rings inside the window let you hang charms and small plushies behind the clear panel alongside your pins.
Our bags have 7 D-rings and 4 lobster clasps across the bag. That's enough to attach things inside and outside without running out of points.
