The clutch is the small piece that fastens onto the pin post behind the insert to hold your pin in place. It's the least exciting part of the setup and the part most likely to ruin your day when it fails. Here's what each type does and when to use it.
Rubber clutches (butterfly clutches)
These are the ones that come with most pins by default. Two metal prongs inside a rubber housing grip the pin post through friction. You squeeze them to push on, pull to remove.
Pros: cheap, come free with almost every pin, easy to put on and take off, thin profile so they sit flat behind the insert.
Cons: they loosen over time, especially with repeated on-off cycles. Heat softens the rubber grip. If you leave a bag in a hot car, rubber clutches can lose their hold. They also fall off more easily when the bag gets bumped, which matters for daily carry and school use.
For convention-only bags where you're setting up the display at the start of the day and not touching it until pack-down, rubber clutches are fine.
Locking pin clutches
These have a mechanism that clips or locks around the pin post. You press a release to remove them. They don't rely on friction alone, so they hold under movement and bumps.
Pros: secure hold, pins don't fall off during daily carry, most designs grip tight enough that the pin won't wobble or rotate on the post.
Cons: slightly thicker profile than rubber clutches, so they sit a few millimetres further from the insert surface. More expensive (around $0.30 to $0.80 per clutch depending on brand and quantity). Harder to remove quickly if you're swapping pins often.
For daily carry bags, school bags, and any bag that moves a lot, locking clutches are worth the upgrade. The cost difference across 30 pins is under $25 and you stop losing pins.
Magnetic clutches
A rare third option. These use a strong magnet to hold the pin post against a metal backing plate. No squeezing, no clicking. You just place the pin and the magnet holds it.
Pros: fastest to place and remove, no wear on the pin post, clean look from behind.
Cons: only work with specific insert types that have a metal backing layer. Not widely available. Strong magnets can interfere with cards and electronics if they're close enough. The magnet strength needs to match the pin weight, and a heavy 75mm pin might need a stronger magnet than what ships by default.
These are niche. Most collectors won't need them unless they're swapping displays very frequently and the speed matters.
Mixing clutch types
If you use locking clutches on pins you never want to lose (rare pins, expensive pins, sentimental ones) and rubber clutches on pins you swap often (trading stock, seasonal display), you get security where it matters and convenience where it matters. The slight difference in profile height is invisible behind the insert.
How many to buy
Buy more than you think you need. Rubber clutches get lost. You'll drop one behind your desk and never find it. A bag of 50 locking clutches costs around $15 to $25 and gives you a full set plus spares for the inevitable replacements and additions.
One thing to check
Make sure the clutch fits your pin posts. Most enamel pins use a standard post size, but some cheaper pins use thinner posts that don't grip properly in standard clutches. If a clutch feels loose on a pin post no matter how tight you push it, the post is probably undersized. A small piece of clear tape wrapped around the post thickens it enough to grip.
