It depends on two things: the size of the window and the size of your pins. But the short answer for most bags is fewer than you think, and more than you need.
A standard 25mm (1 inch) hard enamel pin takes up about 3cm x 3cm of space once you account for the post and clutch on the back, plus enough gap so the pin next to it doesn't scratch the enamel. That's roughly 9 square centimetres per pin.
Small windows (under 20cm wide)
These are your crossbody bags, slings, and mini backpacks. You're looking at 8 to 15 pins depending on the shape of the window. Enough for a curated display, not enough for a full collection dump. These work well when you want to show your top favourites rather than everything you own.
Medium windows (20cm to 30cm wide)
Most standard ita bag backpacks fall here. You can fit 20 to 30 standard pins comfortably. This is the sweet spot for most collectors because it's enough to build a themed layout without the display looking sparse or overcrowded.
Our 15 inch backpack sits in this range. The insert fits about 25 standard pins per pad, and the bag ships with two pads so you can have a convention layout and a daily layout ready to swap.
Large windows (30cm+ wide)
Our 17 inch backpack has the largest window in our range. You can fit 30 to 40 standard 25mm pins, or fewer larger pins (50mm pins take up roughly four times the space of a 25mm pin). This is the bag for people who want their display to be visible from across a convention hall.
Pin size matters more than window size
A collection of 50mm pins fills a large window faster than you expect. Five or six big pins and you're already running out of room. If your collection mixes sizes, plan your layout before you start pinning. Put the large statement pieces in the centre and fill around them with smaller pins.
Acrylic pins and charms take up more visual space than enamel pins because of the clear acrylic border. Account for that border when you're planning how many will fit.
Weight is the real limit
30 standard 25mm hard enamel pins weigh roughly 300 to 400 grams. That's not much on its own, but add the bag, a laptop, a water bottle, and your convention supplies, and the total load matters. A bag with padded straps handles the weight fine. A bag with thin fabric straps starts digging into your shoulders after an hour.
The insert matters here too. A foam-backed insert distributes the pin weight evenly across the window rather than concentrating it at the bottom where gravity pulls everything. Without an insert, pins slide down and cluster at the base. With one, they stay where you put them.
The actual question most people are asking
"How many pins fit" is usually code for "is this bag big enough for my collection." The honest answer is that your collection will always outgrow your bag. Buy the window size that fits what you want to display right now, not what you think you'll own in two years. You can always rotate pins in and out. That's what the second insert pad is for.
