Your ita bag goes to conventions, outdoor events, daily commutes, and whatever else you throw at it. It's going to get dirty. Here's how to clean each part without wrecking the materials.
The clear window
The PVC or TPU window picks up fingerprints, smudges, and a film of dust that makes the display look hazy over time. Wipe it with a microfibre cloth and a small amount of glass cleaner or isopropyl alcohol. Don't use paper towels because they leave micro-scratches on PVC that build up into a permanent haze.
For stubborn marks, a dab of rubbing alcohol on the microfibre cloth works. Wipe in one direction rather than circles to avoid swirl marks.
Don't use acetone, nail polish remover, or anything with solvents. These will cloud PVC permanently. If you're not sure what's in a cleaning product, test a tiny spot in the corner first.
The fabric body
For nylon and Oxford fabric bags, wipe the surface with a damp cloth and mild soap. Don't soak the bag or put it in a washing machine. The waterproof coating on the fabric can degrade in a washing machine, and the agitation can damage internal structures like the laptop sleeve padding.
For cotton canvas bags, same approach. Damp cloth, mild soap, air dry. Canvas can handle a bit more scrubbing than coated nylon but still shouldn't go in the machine.
For PU leather or pleather, wipe with a damp cloth only. Soap and water is fine for surface dirt. Don't use leather conditioner on PU leather because it's not real leather and the conditioner can leave a sticky residue. If the PU surface is already peeling, cleaning won't fix that. That's a material failure, not a dirt problem.
The zippers
Zippers accumulate dust and grit in the teeth, which makes them stick and eventually break. Run a cotton bud along the zipper teeth to clear debris. If a zipper is sticking, rub a graphite pencil along the teeth. The graphite acts as a dry lubricant. Don't use oil-based lubricants because they attract more dirt.
Waterproof zippers need the same care but are more sensitive to debris because the waterproof coating creates a tighter seal that grit can damage.
The insert
Remove the insert from the bag before cleaning. If it's foam-backed with a fabric face, wipe the fabric face with a damp cloth. Don't soak it because the foam inside takes a long time to dry and can develop mould if it stays damp.
If pin holes have gotten enlarged from repeated pinning, there's no way to fix that. The foam compresses permanently where pins have been. This is normal wear. If the holes are large enough that pins wobble, it's time for a replacement insert.
The straps
Straps absorb sweat, especially the shoulder pads. Wipe them down with a damp cloth and mild soap after convention days or long wear sessions. If the padding inside the strap has compressed unevenly, there's no fix for that. Padded straps compress over time under load. Higher density foam compresses more slowly, which is why strap quality matters in the first place.
Drying
Air dry everything. Never use a hair dryer or put any part of the bag near a heater. Heat warps PVC, degrades waterproof coatings, and can cause PU leather to crack faster.
Hang the bag open with zippers unzipped so air circulates inside. If the interior got damp, stuff it loosely with newspaper to absorb moisture. Dry in shade, not direct sun, because UV yellows PVC and fades fabric dyes.
How often
Wipe the window down every couple of weeks if it's a daily carry bag. Clean the body whenever it looks dirty or after an outdoor event. Clean the straps after any day where you wore the bag for more than a few hours in warm weather. Do a full clean, window, body, zippers, straps, and interior, once every couple of months or at the end of convention season.
