Ita Bag Layout Ideas: How to Arrange Your Pins

The layout makes or breaks how your bag looks. Thirty great pins arranged badly look worse than fifteen average pins arranged well. Here's how to think about your display.

Start with a centre piece

Pick your favourite pin or your largest pin and put it in the middle of the insert. Everything else arranges around it. This gives the eye somewhere to land first. A display with no focal point looks like a junk drawer behind glass.

If you don't have an obvious centre piece, use a cluster of three to five pins from the same series as your anchor. Group them tight in the centre and build outward from there.

Colour blocking

Group pins by colour rather than by fandom or series. A row of blue pins next to a row of pink pins creates visual bands that read well from a distance. Mixed colours scattered randomly look chaotic up close and like noise from across a room.

This is the single easiest way to make any collection look intentional. You don't need matching pins. You need pins that happen to share a colour placed near each other.

Symmetry vs asymmetry

Symmetrical layouts feel polished. Mirror the left side onto the right side, with matching sizes and colours. This works well for smaller collections where every pin is placed with intention.

Asymmetrical layouts feel more natural and work better when your collection is large and varied. Weight the display toward one side or cluster things in organic groups rather than rigid rows. The trick with asymmetry is that it needs to look deliberate, not accidental. Leave intentional gaps rather than filling every centimetre.

Size gradient

Put larger pins in the centre or bottom and smaller pins toward the edges. This creates a natural visual weight distribution. Large pins at the top with small pins below looks top-heavy and unbalanced.

If you have a mix of 25mm, 38mm, and 50mm pins, the 50mm pins anchor the middle, the 38mm pins surround them, and the 25mm pins fill the outer edges.

The border trick

Leave 1cm of empty space around the entire edge of your insert. Pins pushed right to the edge of the window look cramped and some might be partially hidden by the window frame. A clean border of empty space makes the whole display look more composed.

Theme your rotations

If you have more pins than window space (and you will), rotate your display by theme rather than randomly swapping individual pins. A Ghibli week, a pastel week, a villain week. Each rotation feels like a new bag rather than a slightly different version of the same one.

This is where having two inserts helps. Set up the next theme on the spare insert while the current one is in the bag. Swap takes 30 seconds instead of repinning 30 pins at your desk.

What doesn't work

Overcrowding. Pins touching each other scratch each other. Enamel against enamel will leave marks. Leave at least 5mm between pins, more if you have glitter enamel which has a rougher surface.

Mixing pin-back types. If some pins have rubber clutches and others have locking clutches, the different heights make the display uneven when viewed from the front. Try to use the same clutch type across the whole insert.

Ignoring the backing colour. A white insert shows through transparent acrylic pins differently than a black insert does. If your collection includes a lot of clear acrylic, pick an insert colour that works as a background for those pieces.
