Best Displays for Markets and Craft Fairs (Not Just Conventions)

Table of Contents

A lot of display advice online assumes you're setting up in a convention centre with a pipe-and-drape booth behind you. That's not most markets. Craft fairs, makers' markets, and local pop-ups have their own rules, their own tables, and their own crowd, and treating them like a mini-con is usually a mistake.

    Markets are a different animal

The biggest difference is pace. Convention crowds move fast and scan booths in seconds while walking a packed aisle. Market crowds stroll. They've often got a coffee in hand, they're there for a few hours, not a full weekend, and they're browsing multiple similar stalls, artists, jam makers, jewellery, candles, side by side. Your display needs to invite a slower kind of attention instead of grabbing someone's eye mid-stride.

That changes what "good" looks like. A tall, dramatic wall of prints can actually feel closed off at a market, more like a shop counter than an open table. Lower, more open layouts that let people step right up and pick things up tend to do better when the whole vibe of the event is unhurried.

Outdoor markets have their own physics

Wind is the thing nobody warns you about until it ruins your first outdoor market. Prints go flying, tablecloths lift, lightweight signage tips over. If you're doing outdoor fairs regularly, weight and stability matter more than they ever would indoors. Sandbags or water-fillable weights on any freestanding stand aren't optional once you've had one gust take out your whole print bin. Sun is the other one: direct light fades prints and stickers over a full day outside, so if you can angle your display to keep merchandise out of direct sun for at least part of the day, do it.

    Weather and setup time

Markets often have shorter load-in windows than conventions, sometimes 30 minutes instead of a few hours, especially at ones that reset for a new day. A display that's genuinely quick to build matters more here than at a three-day con where you set up once. Panel-based kits that pack flat and go together without tools are worth it specifically for this reason. If you're regularly doing markets with tight load-in times, something like Shapeshift Base sets up in under 30 minutes once you've done it a couple times, which is the difference between being ready when doors open and still fumbling with your display as the first customers walk up.

Diversifying beyond the standard con circuit

If you've only ever done conventions, it's worth trying a market or two even if it feels like a step down in scale. Different crowd, different price expectations (market shoppers are often more used to $20-40 handmade goods than $60 art prints, so know your room), and a genuinely different creative community. Some artists find their steadiest income comes from a rotation of a few reliable local markets rather than chasing bigger cons every weekend, since travel costs and table fees eat into convention margins in a way a nearby Saturday market just doesn't.

    Quick checklist for market-specific setups

    • Check if the market is indoor or outdoor before you plan your display, wind and sun changes everything.
    • Bring weights for anything freestanding if you're outdoors, even on a calm-looking day.
    • Favour a lower, more open layout over a tall wall unless the market is genuinely high-traffic.
    • Confirm load-in time and make sure your setup actually fits inside it, time yourself once at home.
    • Bring a backup plan for rain if it's outdoors and not fully covered, a tarp or clear cover for your table.
    • Know your price point relative to the other stalls, markets often skew toward lower-ticket items than conventions.

None of this means markets are lesser than conventions, they're just a different game with different rules, and the artists who do well at both are usually the ones who stopped trying to run one identical setup everywhere.
