Carry-On vs Checked: What Actually Fits Where

"Will this fit in the overhead bin?" is a question you should be answering BEFORE con weekend, not while standing in the boarding line with a line of impatient passengers behind you. Let's actually break down what goes where.

The carry-on math

Most airlines cap carry-on bags around 56x36x23cm. That's not a lot of room, but it's more than people think once your display actually packs flat. Our smaller kits, the Core (24 panels) and Shapeshift Base (46 panels), can fit inside that allowance when broken down, panels stacked flat, connectors and hooks bagged separately. That means no checked bag for your display at all on a lot of trips.

Where checked baggage makes sense

Bigger builds like the Shapeshift (70 panels, the most popular all-rounder) or Shapeshift Max (92 panels) will usually need a checked bag. That's fine. The goal isn't zero checked bags, it's ONE checked bag instead of an oversized freight case that costs double or triple. Because the panels still pack flat, even a big kit rolls into a normal-sized checked suitcase.

What should never go in checked luggage

Your actual artwork. Prints, originals, anything one-of-a-kind should travel with YOU, in a portfolio bag or a hard case in the cabin. Baggage handlers are not gentle, and lost luggage happens. Save the checked bag for the display hardware, which is replaceable, and carry the irreplaceable stuff yourself.

Pack smart, not just small

Weight distribution matters as much as size. Put your heaviest pieces (connectors, hooks) at the bottom near the wheels of your checked bag, panels layered flat on top so they don't bend or bow in transit. Frosted polypropylene panels are tougher than they look, but they still deserve to travel flat, not folded under other gear.
