How To Travel With Fragile Art And A Full Display

Two fragile things, one trip. Your art, which can't be replaced, and your display, which needs to survive being manhandled by baggage crews and shoved into car trunks. Handle them the same way and you're doing it wrong. Here's how to actually separate the risk.

Your art gets special treatment. Your display doesn't need to.

Original prints, canvases, anything one-of-a-kind should NEVER go in checked luggage or a car trunk loose. Rigid portfolio cases, flat art tubes for prints, bubble wrap on anything with a frame or glass. This stuff travels with you, in the cabin, where you control how it's handled.

Your display hardware is a different story. It's replaceable, it's meant to be knocked around a bit, and a well-built modular kit is designed to survive repeated setup and teardown. Don't baby your display panels the way you baby your art, that's wasted energy and space.

Pack fragile art flat, never rolled if you can avoid it

Rolling prints saves space but stresses the paper and can crack certain inks over time, especially on longer trips. If you have room, pack flat in a rigid case. If you must roll, use an acid-free tube and unroll it as soon as you land to let it relax before it goes on display.

Let your display do the heavy lifting, literally

On show morning, build your wall completely before you unpack a single print. Under 30 minutes, no tools. That way your fragile pieces are only out of their protective packaging for the shortest time possible, straight from the case onto the finished wall.
