The emotional rollercoaster of a bad sales day

The emotional rollercoaster of a bad sales day

Table of Contents

You sold almost nothing today. Maybe a sticker, maybe two, on a day you paid a table fee that costs more than that. It's not just a math problem, it stings in a way that a bad day at most jobs doesn't, because the thing not selling is your art, made by you, put out in front of hundreds of strangers who walked past it.

Why it hits so much harder than the numbers suggest

At a lot of jobs, a slow day is just a slow day. At your own table, a slow day can feel like a referendum on whether you're good enough, whether people like your work, whether this whole thing was a mistake. That leap from "low sales today" to "my art isn't good" happens fast and it happens to basically everyone, including artists whose booths have lines by 11am at their better shows.

It helps to name what's actually happening in your body during a bad day. Watching people glance at your table and walk on triggers something close to social rejection, over and over, all day. That's genuinely draining, and it's not a character flaw that it gets to you.

The spiral usually goes something like this

    • Hour one: it's early, still fine, plenty of day left.
    • Hour three: a flicker of worry, but you're telling yourself it'll pick up.
    • Hour five: comparing your table to the one down the row that's busier.
    • Hour seven: full spiral, questioning the prices, the display, the art, the whole plan.
    • Drive home: replaying the day and deciding things that aren't actually true.

Recognizing which stage you're in is oddly useful. Hour seven you is not a reliable judge of your business. Hour seven you is tired, disappointed, and pattern-matching on one data point.

What to actually do in the moment

You can't force the feeling away, but you can stop it from making decisions for you. Don't rewrite your whole pricing strategy at 4pm on a bad show day. Don't post something self-deprecating about your work online while you're still at the table, tempting as it is. Don't compare your table to anyone else's without knowing their costs, their following, or how many bad shows they had before this one good one.

Instead, get through the remaining hours as kindly to yourself as you can. Drink water, eat something, and if you're at a show with a friend or table neighbor, tell them honestly that today's rough. Saying it out loud to another vendor usually gets you "oh my god same" more often than you'd expect, because everyone's had this day.

    Processing it afterward, properly

Give yourself the evening off from analyzing it. The next day, once you've slept, look at it with actual curiosity instead of judgment. Was it the show, the weather, the day of the week, something about your setup, or genuinely just one of those unpredictable days that happens for no clear reason? Sometimes there's a real lesson. Sometimes there isn't one, and that's fine too.

Keep a simple log across shows if you don't already, date, venue, rough sales, general vibe. One bad day means nothing. A bad day that's part of a pattern across several shows at the same type of event tells you something useful. You can only see that pattern if you're tracking more than just today's mood.

It doesn't mean what it feels like it means

A bad sales day is data, not a verdict. The artists who stick around aren't the ones who never have one, they're the ones who let it be a bad day and then show up to the next table anyway.
