Everyone says "flat-pack" like it's a magic word that fixes all your travel problems. Nobody actually explains WHY it matters, so let's do that properly, because there's a real mechanical reason it changes everything about how you travel to shows.
Folding is not the same as flat
A folding display still has hinges, brackets, joints that don't fully collapse. Fold a metal frame and you still end up with something roughly a third of its assembled size, awkward, angular, hard to stack with anything else. True flat-pack means the pieces come completely APART. No hinges holding a folded shape. Just individual flat panels and small connectors that stack like a deck of cards.
Flat things stack. Folded things don't.
This is the part nobody explains. Flat panels stack directly on top of each other with almost zero wasted space between them. Folded frames leave gaps, angles, dead air in your suitcase or trunk. That wasted space is the difference between your display fitting in a carry-on and needing its own oversized case.
Our panels are 35x35cm frosted polypropylene, and they genuinely stack flat, no folding mechanism involved. Combined with ABS connectors and PLA hooks that pack down small, the whole kit collapses into something that fits the standard 56x36x23cm carry-on allowance on smaller builds.
Flat-pack means faster rebuild too
Here's the bonus nobody mentions: flat pieces that separate completely are also FASTER to reassemble, because there's no fighting a stuck hinge or a bent bracket from the last show. You lay out your panels, click connectors in, hang your hooks. Under 30 minutes, no tools, every time, because nothing got bent out of shape in transit like a folding frame can.

It scales without changing the system
The other advantage: flat-pack pieces are modular by nature. Is flat-pack actually more durable than folding frames?
Often, yes. Folding frames rely on hinges that wear out and bend over repeated use. Flat panels with separate connectors have fewer moving parts to fail.
Does flat-pack take longer to set up than a folding frame?
No, usually faster. There's no fighting a bent hinge or stuck fold. You're just clicking flat panels into connectors, under 30 minutes with no tools.
Why don't more displays use true flat-pack construction?
It requires designing the whole system around disassembly from the start, which is more work upfront than just adding a hinge to an existing frame. It's worth it for anyone who travels though.
