Your First Artist Alley Table: The Ultimate Starter Guide

Getting your first artist alley acceptance email is exciting for about a day, and then the panic sets in. There's a lot to figure out between "I got in" and actually sitting behind a table, so let's walk through the whole arc in order, from the month you find out to the moment doors open.

Right after you get accepted

Before you buy anything, get your table dimensions from the vendor packet. Half table or full table, this single number decides almost every other decision you'll make. Also check the venue's rules on display height, since most conventions cap booth height around 175cm, about five stacked panels, though this varies enough that you should always confirm your specific event's limit rather than assume.

This is also the point to start deciding what you're actually selling. New artists often try to bring everything they've ever made. Six to eight weeks out: build your display plan

Vertical display matters more than almost anything else on your table. A flat table alone gets walked past. Show day

Get there earlier than you think you need to. Load-in always takes longer than the timeline suggests, between parking, hauling gear, and finding your actual table among a sea of identical folding tables. Set up methodically rather than frantically, structure first, then product, then signage and price tags last, since those are the pieces most likely to get knocked around while you're still building everything else.

Once you're set up, the biggest adjustment is patience. Slow stretches happen to everyone, sales come in waves rather than a steady stream, and the person browsing for ten minutes without buying is not a rejection, they're just still deciding.

After the show

Write down what worked and what didn't while it's fresh: what sold, what sat untouched, what part of setup took too long, what you wish you'd packed. This one habit does more for your second show than any single purchase will. Your first table is never your best table.
