The Booth Mistake That Makes Your Prints Look Cheap
Your prints are gorgeous. High quality paper, vibrant colours, sharp detail. And somehow on your table they look like they belong in a bargain bin.
The problem is almost never the print. It is ALWAYS the context around it.
Prints lying flat on a table look like they are waiting to be sorted, not sold. Prints fanned out overlapping each other look like a clearance pile. Prints in clear plastic sleeves with price stickers on the front look like they came from a dollar store.
The fix is embarrassingly simple. Stand them up. Put them in a display that holds them upright at eye level. Give each print enough space that a customer can see the whole image without touching it. Suddenly the same $15 print looks like a $40 print because the display is telling a different story.
A modular display kit with shelving holds prints upright at multiple heights. Frosted panels behind them create contrast without competing. And because you can adjust shelf positions, you can give your hero prints more space and group your smaller ones tighter.
The other killer? Lighting. Convention halls have fluorescent overheads that wash out colour. One small clip-on light aimed at your prints from above makes an enormous difference. Not a spotlight. Just enough warm light to make the colours pop the way they do on your screen at home.
Your prints are not cheap. Stop letting your display tell people they are.
The Booth Mistake That Makes People Think You're Not Open Yet
You are open for business. Products are out. Prices are visible. But people keep walking past like your table is still being set up. Here is what is happening and EXACTLY how to fix it.
1. Your Display Is Below Eye Level
If everything sits flat on the table, your booth reads as "unpacking" from ten feet away. Attendees scan at eye level first. A flat table blends into the tablecloth. Build UP with a vertical display so your products catch eyes from across the aisle.
2. You Are Sitting Behind The Table
Nothing says "closed" like a vendor sitting down, looking at their phone, with a wall of products between them and the crowd. Stand when traffic is heavy. Sit to the SIDE when you need a break, not directly behind your display.
3. Your Tablecloth Is A Mess
Wrinkled fabric, mismatched cloths, visible storage bins underneath. These are setup cues, not open-for-business cues. Iron your cloth. Hide your bins. A clean base makes everything above it look intentional.
4. No Products Face The Aisle
If your prints face straight up or straight back, the aisle-side view is blank cardboard and table edge. Angle your hero products toward foot traffic. Use a modular display kit to create a vertical showcase that faces outward.
5. Missing Price Tags
No prices visible from the aisle means people assume you are still setting up. Or worse, they assume everything is expensive. Clear pricing from six feet away is a BIG signal that you are open and ready.
6. The Entry Point Is Unclear
Where does someone look first when they approach? If the answer is "everywhere at once" then you have no entry point. Create one with your tallest, most eye-catching piece front and centre.
Every fix takes under five minutes. Check our full kit range for displays that solve half this list out of the box.
What Happens When Your Display Doesn't Match Your Table Size
You show up with a massive backdrop. The table is half the size you expected. Now your display hangs over the edge, blocks your neighbour, and screams "I did NOT plan this."
It happens more often than you think. And it is completely preventable.
The Standard Table Problem
Most conventions and markets give you a 180cm (6ft) table. Some give you 120cm. A few generous ones offer 240cm. The problem is that vendors build displays at home without knowing which one they are getting.
A display built for a 180cm table on a 120cm surface means panels hanging off the edge, products crammed together, and zero breathing room. A display built for 120cm on a 180cm table looks sad and empty with awkward gaps on both sides.
How To Size Your Display Right
Build for the standard 180cm table first. Our modular display kit is designed to fit exactly this width. The panels are 35x35cm each, so you can calculate your footprint before you leave the house.
If your table turns out smaller, remove side panels. If it is bigger, spread your products wider into the extra space. Modular means you ADAPT instead of panic.
What To Do When You Get There And It Is Wrong
First, breathe. Second, look at your display as building blocks, not a fixed unit. Remove the outermost columns if the table is smaller. Shift your hero products to the centre. Use the spare panels as risers or flat displays on the table surface instead.
The vendors who handle this well are the ones who practised removing panels at home. Five minutes of rehearsal saves thirty minutes of sweating at 7am.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I only find out the table size on the day?Build your display in two widths at home. Mark which panels to remove for the smaller version. Takes ten minutes of prep and saves your entire morning.
Can I bring my own table? Some markets allow it, most conventions do not. Always check with the organiser before assuming you can BYO.
What is the safest display width to build for?180cm. It is the most common vendor table worldwide. Our full kit range is built around this standard.
The Aesthetic Mistakes That Make A Table Feel Unfinished
Some booths look great until you really look at them. Something is off but you cannot put your finger on it. It just feels... unfinished. Like a room that is missing one piece of furniture. Here are the aesthetic mistakes that create that feeling.
Visible storage under the table. Nothing kills the illusion faster than a customer glancing down and seeing cardboard boxes, plastic bins, and crumpled bags stuffed under your tablecloth. Either get a cloth that reaches the floor or use opaque containers that look intentional. Your booth ends at the ground, not at the table edge.
Mixed display materials. Half your prints are in plastic sleeves pinned to a corkboard. The other half are on a modular display kit with clean panel shelving. The modular half looks professional. The corkboard half looks like a dorm room. Pick one display system and commit. Mixing reads as "I ran out of shelves," which reads as "I did not plan this."
No breathing room between products. Every centimetre of table space is covered. Prints overlap. Stickers touch. There is no gap anywhere. This is not abundance. This is overwhelm. Leave at least 2-3cm between items. The white space is not wasted space. It is the thing that makes each piece readable.
Mismatched price tags. Some are handwritten on sticky notes. Some are printed. Some are different sizes. Price tags are the most-read text in your booth besides your banner. If they look thrown together, the whole booth inherits that energy. Print them all the same way, same size, same font. Takes 20 minutes at home and changes everything.
The empty top shelf. You have a vertical display with three levels and the top one has... one print and a lot of empty panel. Top-level displays are the first thing visible from a distance. An empty or sparse top shelf makes your booth look under-stocked even if the table is loaded. Fill it or remove the shelf entirely. Browse the full kit range for configurations that match your actual inventory volume so you do not over-build.
The wrong tablecloth colour. It clashes with your panels, your art, or both. Or worse, it is clearly a bedsheet you grabbed this morning. Your tablecloth is the single biggest colour field in your booth. It deserves a deliberate choice. Spend $15 on one that coordinates with your display. That is the cheapest upgrade with the biggest visual impact.
No focal point. Every piece is displayed at the same size, same height, same priority. The eye enters the booth and has no idea where to go first. Pick one hero piece. Display it larger, higher, or more prominently than everything else. That is your anchor. Everything else supports it.
Cables and chargers in the sightline. Your phone charger snaking across the table. An extension cord looping behind your display. A power strip visible at floor level. Tape them down. Route them behind panels. Use wireless charging. Every cable is a crack in the illusion that this is a curated space rather than a temporary setup.
The Common Setup Mistakes That Cost You The First Five Minutes
Doors open at a fixed time whether your booth is ready or not. And the first five minutes of a con, when the initial rush of early birds is walking the aisles fresh and undistracted, are some of the most valuable minutes of the entire day. Blow your setup and you're rebuilding your table while your best window of the day walks right past.
Starting too late for what you actually need to build
The biggest mistake isn't a bad layout. It's running out of time to build a good one. Artists show up thinking an hour is plenty, then spend forty minutes on cables, easels, and a tablecloth that won't sit straight, leaving no time for the actual display work that gets people to stop. Setup speed isn't a nice-to-have, it directly decides how finished your booth looks when the doors open. A kit that goes up in under 30 minutes with no tools required means the whole hour can go toward arranging your best pieces instead of fighting hardware.
Overbuilding a display you can't finish under pressure
The opposite mistake happens too. Complicated DIY setups with a dozen loose parts, custom-cut wood, or fold-out shelving that only makes sense with a diagram in front of you. It looks great at home. It falls apart under a con-hall clock. A modular system built from repeatable panels means you're not solving a puzzle at 7am, you're just clicking panels together the same way every single time.
Not knowing your table before you arrive
Convention tables are almost always the same standard size, but plenty of artists still bring a display that overhangs, underhangs, or wobbles because it was never actually measured against a real 180cm table at home. Test your setup before con day, not during it. A kit built for the standard 6ft table removes the guesswork entirely, so the only thing you're deciding on-site is which pieces go where.
How early should I actually start setting up?
Aim to have your structure fully built with at least 20 to 30 minutes left before doors, so the last stretch is just arranging inventory, not assembling hardware.
What's the biggest time-waster in most setups?
Tools. Anything requiring a screwdriver, allen key, or zip ties adds unpredictable time, especially when a piece doesn't fit quite right and you're troubleshooting live.
Does a faster setup actually change sales?
Yes, indirectly but significantly. A booth that's fully built and calm when doors open captures the early rush. One still being assembled loses those first customers entirely, and they don't circle back.
The first five minutes aren't a bonus round, they're some of your best selling time all day. A modular booth display kit is built specifically to remove the setup chaos that eats into it, panels hold up to 5kg per shelf once assembled correctly so your display stays solid all day, not just for the photo. Take a look at the full collection of kits before your next con and get your mornings back.
Why Your Prices Need To Be Visible, Not Hidden
If you've ever watched a shopper pick up a print, turn it over looking for a price, find nothing, and set it back down without saying a word, you already know the mistake this article is about. Hidden pricing doesn't feel mysterious to customers. It feels like a wall. And most people won't climb it, they'll just walk to the next booth instead.
Why hiding your prices costs you sales
Artist alley browsing runs on silence. People scan tables without much eye contact, doing quiet math about what they can afford this weekend. The moment they have to ask you a price out loud, you've turned a low-effort browse into a social interaction they didn't sign up for. Some customers are fine with that. A lot aren't, especially first-timers who don't know the etiquette yet. Visible pricing removes that entire hurdle before it exists.
What visible actually means
It doesn't mean a sticker on every single item, though that's a valid option. It means information a shopper can absorb without talking to you. A clean price sheet at eye level. Tags legible from a normal standing distance, not a squint. Ranges posted clearly if your pricing varies by size, so nobody has to guess whether a print is five dollars or fifty before they commit to picking it up.
Give your pricing somewhere to live
A flat tablecloth setup rarely has room for signage that doesn't compete with your actual display. This is where booth structure starts to matter more than people expect. Panel space built into a proper display gives your price sheet its own spot, separate from the art, at a height people actually look at. A modular booth kit builds that vertical real estate in, and because it sets up in under 30 minutes with no tools, you're not scrambling to tape price tags together five minutes before doors open. Every kit is sized for a standard 180cm table too, so it's not a guessing game on fit.
Confidence is part of the sale
A hidden price can read as uncertainty, like you're worried the number won't hold up to scrutiny. A visible one reads as confidence. Here's what it is, here's what it costs, no surprises. That confidence is contagious. Shoppers linger longer at booths where they don't feel like they're about to be ambushed by a price they weren't ready for.
Do I need to price every single item individually?
No. A general price sheet covering print sizes, sticker packs, and commission rates covers most of your table. Save individual tags for one-off pieces or anything priced outside your normal range.
What if my prices change between conventions?
Printed sheets are cheap enough to redo each time. Avoid handwritten crossed-out prices where possible, they read as disorganized even when your actual pricing is fine.
Does price visibility actually affect impulse buys?
Yes. Impulse buys depend on a fast yes. If a customer has to stop, ask, and wait for an answer, the impulse moment usually passes before you finish your sentence.
Visible pricing is one of the cheapest fixes on this whole list. It costs a printed sheet and a few minutes of planning, and it removes one of the biggest silent reasons people put your work back down. Browse the full range of booth kits if your current setup doesn't leave room for it.
The Sign Placement Mistake That Confuses Customers
We need to talk about your sign. Not whether you have one. Where you put it.
The most common sign fail we see isn't a bad logo or a boring font. It's placement. Your shop name is taped to the front of the table, at knee height, facing the floor. Or it's propped up behind a rack so it only becomes visible once someone is already standing at your booth. Or it's on a banner so far above your actual display that people connect it to the booth next to you instead.
Here's why this actually matters and it's not just aesthetics. A shopper walking an aisle is scanning fast. They see art they like, then their eyes flick to find out who made it and what the shop is called, almost on instinct. If that information isn't immediately obvious, a weird thing happens: they hesitate. And hesitation at a con, with a hundred other booths competing for that same three seconds of attention, means they just keep walking. Not because they didn't like your work. Because your booth made them work too hard to connect the art to the name.
Sign placement should answer "whose booth is this" before someone even breaks stride. That means eye level, not table level. That means facing the walkway, not tucked sideways where only people already standing at your table can read it. And it means being close enough to your display that nobody has to guess which booth it belongs to.
This is easier to fix than people think. It's rarely a sign problem. It's a STRUCTURE problem. A flat tablecloth setup doesn't give you anywhere good to mount signage at eye level, so it ends up wherever there's a flat surface, which is usually the worst spot. A modular booth kit gives you actual panel height to hang your sign where a walking crowd will actually see it, and the whole thing goes up in under 30 minutes with no tools involved.
Go look at your last con photos. Find your sign. Time how long it takes. If it's not instant, move it. Check out the full range of kits if your current table just doesn't have the real estate to fix it properly. Your art deserves a name tag people can actually read.
What A Booth Rating Video Taught Us About First Impressions
There's a booth in almost every rating video that gets the same reaction. The artist is talented. The prints are genuinely good. And the rater still gives it a low score. Every time, the comments say the same thing: "I would have walked right past this."
The booth in question had a card table, a plain black cloth, and a stack of prints laid flat with a handwritten price sheet taped to the front edge. No height. No sign visible from more than a few feet away. The art itself, once the rater actually stopped and looked, was strong. But nobody was stopping. The booth simply didn't ask anyone to.
That's the part that stuck with us. The rating wasn't about talent. It was about the first three seconds a stranger's eyes spend on your table while walking the aisle at normal con speed. Three seconds isn't enough time to appreciate technique. It's barely enough time to register a shape and decide if it's worth a second look.
What actually earns that second look
Height, first. A booth that rises above table level breaks up the sea of flat tables around it and gives eyes something to catch on. Color and light, second. Harsh convention lighting flattens everything, so panels that diffuse the glare rather than reflect it straight back make the art look like art instead of a photocopy under a spotlight. And a clear, visible sign, third. Not clever. Not tucked behind the register box. Visible.
The fix for that specific booth would have been simple. Not more inventory, not better art, just a structure to put the existing work on. A kit like the modular booth display builds vertical panel space in well under 30 minutes with zero tools, which matters when you're setting up at 7am before doors open and every minute counts. Suddenly the same prints have height, the frosted panels take the edge off flat hall lighting, and the sign has somewhere to actually be seen.
The lesson from that video wasn't "get better at art." It was "give your art a chance to be seen before anyone judges it." Nobody critiques brushwork from twelve feet away walking past at a fair clip. They decide whether to stop first. Everything after that is up to the work. But nothing after that happens if the booth never earns the stop.
If your setup is currently a table and a prayer, it might be time to look at what actual booth kits can do for that same stack of prints you already have. The talent was never the problem. The table was.
Booth Layout Fails And How To Spot Them In Your Own Setup
We watch a lot of booth rating videos. It's basically a genre now. And after enough of them, the same fails start repeating like a bad drop pattern. If your setup has ever gotten a "hard pass" energy from a stranger scrolling past, it's usually not your art. It's your layout.
Here are the layout fails we see over and over, straight from what actually tanks a booth on camera and in real life.
The dead center table. Table shoved flush against the back wall with nothing rising above it. From six feet away your booth reads as a flat rectangle of paper. Height is what stops feet. If your display doesn't climb, you're invisible in a crowded aisle.
No focal point. Everything is the same size, same distance from the walkway, same visual weight. A shopper's eye needs somewhere to land first. Pick your best piece and give it its own panel, its own lighting, its own moment.
The wall of clutter. Forty prints crammed edge to edge feels like MORE value but reads as noise. People can't process a wall that dense in the two seconds they're walking by. Leave breathing room between pieces.
Blocking your own signage. We've seen booths where a rack, a chair, or the artist's own body sits directly in front of the shop sign. If someone has to lean around you to read your name, you've already lost them.
Flat lighting killing the art. Convention hall lighting is harsh and unflattering, full stop. Panels that diffuse light matter more than people think. Frosted panels soften that glare so colors read true instead of washed out or blown out under fluorescents.
Nothing to browse, only to reach past. If your prints are stacked flat in bins with no standing display, customers have to dig. Digging feels like work. Work loses sales. Vertical panel space turns browsing back into browsing.
Every one of these is fixable without buying new inventory. It's rearranging what you already have on a structure that actually holds it. A modular booth kit gives you the height and the panel real estate to fix all six in one pass, and it goes together in under 30 minutes with no tools, so you're not still building when doors open. Browse the full range of booth kits and find the one that fits your table and your table alone, since everything's built for a standard 180cm setup.
Watch your own booth like it's someone else's rating video. Be honest about what you'd flag. Then fix it before the next con.
The Lighting Mistake That Makes Great Art Look Flat
You've seen it happen. Gorgeous art, clearly talented artist, and somehow the booth photos look dull. Nine times out of ten it's not the art. It's the lighting. Convention halls are not designed with your artwork in mind, and harsh, flat lighting can quietly wreck how great work actually reads in person.
Direct overhead light washes everything out
Most con venues run bright, direct overhead lighting built for crowd visibility, not art display. That kind of light hits flat surfaces hard and creates glare on glossy prints, which flattens color and contrast. Your art looks more vivid on your phone screen than it does sitting under those lights, and that's a real problem when the in-person impression is what actually sells.
Glossy prints under harsh light are a glare magnet
If you print on glossy stock, direct light bounces straight off the surface depending on the angle someone's standing at. People end up seeing a reflection of the ceiling lights instead of your actual artwork. This is SO common and SO easy to fix once you know it's happening.
The fix: diffuse the light before it hits your art
Frosted panels solve this by softening and diffusing light before it reaches your prints, instead of letting harsh direct light hit them straight on. Colors read truer, glare drops, and your booth photographs the way your actual art deserves. It's a small structural detail that makes a bigger visual difference than most vendors expect.
Positioning matters too, not just materials
Where your art sits relative to the nearest overhead light matters. Pieces sitting directly under a fixture take the worst of the glare, while art angled slightly or raised on a tier can catch better ambient light. Combine smart positioning with frosted paneling and you've solved most of the lighting problem without touching a single bulb.
Why does my art look better on camera than in person at cons?
Harsh convention lighting often washes out color and creates glare, especially on glossy prints. Camera exposure can hide this in a way the human eye at the booth can't.
Do I need actual lights to fix this, or just better panels?
Often just better panels. Frosted panels diffuse ambient light without needing extra lighting equipment to haul to every show.
Does this affect matte prints too, or just glossy ones?
Glossy prints suffer the most from glare, but even matte prints can look flat and washed out under harsh direct light without any diffusion.
If your art has been looking flatter than it should under con lighting, try a proper modular display kit with frosted panels built to diffuse harsh light. Check the full kit lineup to find your setup.
Why Overcrowded Tables Actually Sell Less
More prints on the table should mean more sales, right? Nope. Overcrowded booths are one of the sneakiest mistakes out there because it FEELS productive to display everything you've made. In practice, a packed table often sells less than a curated one. Here's why.
The brain shuts down when there's too much to process
When a table is wall-to-wall prints with zero visual breathing room, people's brains do something unhelpful. They skim past it entirely instead of stopping to look closer. Too many choices at once reads as clutter, not abundance, and clutter doesn't invite anyone to slow down.
Your best piece gets buried
If your strongest, most eye-catching print is sitting in a grid of forty other prints at the exact same size, it's not going to stand out. It's competing for attention with your weakest pieces instead of getting a spotlight. Customers can't buy what they never noticed.
Vertical space fixes this without cutting your inventory
The answer isn't to bring less art, it's to give it more room to breathe. A modular panel system lets you spread inventory across multiple tiers instead of one flat surface, so nothing has to compete for the same eyeline. Shapeshift at 70 panels is the most popular size for exactly this reason, it gives a full inventory somewhere to go without crowding.
Curated corners outsell crammed grids
Try grouping pieces by theme or color with a little space around each cluster instead of one continuous wall of prints. It reads as intentional, which makes customers trust that you know what you're doing. A little empty space around your best work isn't wasted space, it's doing marketing for you.
Does less product on display really mean more sales?
Not less product, just better organized product. Spreading inventory across height instead of cramming it flat usually increases sales, not decreases them.
How much of my table should be empty space?
There's no exact number, but small gaps between clusters of work make everything easier to process at a glance, which keeps people looking longer.
What's the easiest way to add breathing room without buying a bigger table?
Go vertical. A panel system fits your existing standard 180cm table and adds display area upward instead of outward.
If your table has been feeling packed no matter how you arrange it, a proper modular display kit gives your inventory somewhere to go. See the full kit lineup to find the right size.
The Wire Grid Tipping Problem Nobody Warns You About
You buy a wire grid, it looks sturdy enough in the product photo, and then five hours into your first con it starts leaning forward like it's trying to escape. Nobody warns first-timers about this because it's not a dramatic failure, it just slowly gets worse until you're constantly re-propping it against your table.
Why wire grids tip in the first place
Most wire grids are designed for light home use, not for holding a full day of stacked prints in a busy aisle where people are bumping the table. The base is often narrow relative to the height, so once weight builds up top-heavy, physics takes over. Add a slightly uneven convention floor and you've got a grid that's basically leaning by lunch.
The clip-hooks that never quite hold
Beyond the tipping, wire grids rely on little clip hooks that shift under weight or work loose over a long day. You end up readjusting prints every hour, which is time you should be spending talking to customers, not babysitting your own shelving.
Why a panel system doesn't have this problem
A modular panel system distributes weight differently. Instead of everything hanging off thin wire clips, panels are built correctly to hold up to 5kg per shelf as a stable, load-bearing structure, not a bunch of hooks doing their best. The base is also part of a full system designed to sit flush on a standard 180cm table, so there's no narrow tipping point to worry about.
The fix isn't more zip ties, it's a different system
A lot of vendors try to fix wire grid tipping with sandbags, zip ties, or propping it against a wall. These are patches, not fixes. The real solution is starting with shelving that was built to carry weight in the first place, so you're not troubleshooting your own display mid-show.
Why does my wire grid keep tipping forward?
Usually top-heavy weight distribution combined with a narrow base. Once enough product is stacked up high, it doesn't take much to tip it.
Can I just add weight to the bottom of a wire grid to stop it?
It can help temporarily, but it's a patch, not a real fix. A properly built panel system solves the root problem instead of managing around it.
Does a panel system take longer to set up than a wire grid?
No, a modular kit typically sets up in under 30 minutes with no tools, which is comparable to or faster than wrestling a wire grid into place.
If you're tired of babysitting a leaning grid, it's worth switching to a proper modular display kit built to hold real weight without tipping. Check the full kit lineup for your table size.
What Experienced Vendors Wish They'd Known On Day One
Ask any vendor who's been doing this for years what they'd tell their first-con self, and you'll hear a lot of the same answers. None of it is secret knowledge. It's just stuff that takes a few painful shows to actually learn. Here's the shortcut.
"I wish I'd invested in a real display sooner"
This is the number one regret, hands down. New vendors often try to save money with a bare table and a cheap grid, then spend a year rebuilding it show by show as pieces break or don't quite work. A proper modular kit is a one-time setup that fits a standard 180cm table and just keeps working, con after con, instead of slowly evolving out of duct tape and spare parts.
"I underestimated how much setup time actually matters"
Early on, setup felt like a chore to rush through however possible. Experienced vendors know it's actually part of the job, and the FASTER it goes, the calmer your whole morning is. A kit that goes up in under 30 minutes with no tools means you're not scrambling five minutes before doors open, still fighting with a shelf that won't quite click into place.
"I wish I'd sized my kit for growth, not just my first show"
A lot of vendors buy small and outgrow it within a year. Going from Core (24 panels) to Shapeshift (46) to Shapeshift Duo (70 panels, the most popular size) is a natural progression as inventory grows, and buying with a LITTLE room to grow saves you from replacing everything twice.
"Nobody told me lighting could make or break how my art looks"
This one surprises a lot of vendors. Convention lighting is often harsh and flat, and it can genuinely wash out artwork that looks vibrant everywhere else. Frosted panels diffuse that light so colors stay true, which matters more than most first-timers expect until they see it side by side.
What's the one thing experienced vendors always mention?
Investing in a proper display system earlier. It's the change that pays off the fastest and the most consistently.
Should I buy a bigger kit than I think I need?
A little room to grow is smart, especially since kits scale from Core up to Shapeshift Max at 92 panels, letting you build up to 175cm tall as your inventory expands.
How long does it really take to master booth setup?
Less time than you'd think, especially with a system that sets up in under 30 minutes with no tools. Most of the learning curve is just deciding where things go, not fighting the hardware.
Skip a few years of trial and error and start with a proper modular display kit. See the full kit lineup to find a size that grows with you.
The Booth Glow-Up: Before And After A Display Upgrade
Every artist has a "before" photo they're a little embarrassed by. A flat table, a leaning grid, prints stacked wherever there was room. Then there's the "after" photo, the one that actually gets reposted. Let's talk about what changes between those two photos, because it's rarely the ART. It's the DISPLAY.
Before: everything fights for the same space
In the before photo, every piece sits at roughly the same height on a flat table. Nothing has room to breathe, and your best print is competing with your worst for the same eyeline. It's not that the setup looks bad exactly, it just looks like nothing in particular. There's no hierarchy telling a customer where to look first.
After: height does the selling for you
The glow-up almost always comes down to vertical structure. A modular panel system lets you build UP, not just out, so your hero pieces get their own tier instead of drowning in a flat spread. Shapeshift kits scale from 46 panels up to 92, so you can go from a modest first booth to a full multi-tier display as your inventory grows, without starting over with new furniture every time.
Before: the wobble everyone's seen before
The before setup usually has some version of the sagging table problem. A grid that bows, a corner that's not quite level, prints stacked high enough to worry about. It's the kind of thing that photographs fine from far away and looks rough up close.
After: it actually holds up all day
Panels built correctly hold up to 5kg per shelf, so the after photo isn't just prettier, it's structurally sound for a full con day. No slow collapse by hour six. And because it sets up in under 30 minutes with no tools, the upgrade doesn't cost you time either, which is honestly the most surprising part of a glow-up like this.
What usually makes the biggest visual difference in a glow-up?
Height. Adding vertical tiers does more for how a booth photographs than almost any other single change.
Do I need to replace my whole setup to see a real glow-up?
Not always. Swapping a flat table display for a modular panel system is usually the one change that fixes the most problems at once.
Will a bigger display actually fit my table?
Kits are built to fit a standard 180cm (6ft) table, so sizing up in panels doesn't mean sizing up your table footprint.
Ready for your own glow-up photo? Start with a proper modular display kit and see the full kit lineup to pick the size that matches where your booth is headed.
Common First-Timer Mistakes That Are Easy To Avoid
Your first con is a LOT. New badge, new crowd, new everything, and somehow you're also supposed to build a booth that sells. No wonder first-timers make the same handful of mistakes over and over. The good news is every one of these is avoidable once you know to watch for it.
Showing up with no real display system
A tablecloth and a stack of prints is not a booth, it's a garage sale. First-timers often skip a real display system to save money, then spend the whole show wishing they had one. A proper kit fits a standard 180cm table and sets up in under 30 minutes with no tools, so it's not the time sink new vendors expect it to be.
Underestimating how much stuff you're actually bringing
Inventory, bags, a cash box, business cards, snacks, a jacket for when the venue gets cold. It all needs somewhere to live, and a table alone runs out of room fast. This is where kit SIZE matters. Core with 24 panels suits a smaller first table, while Shapeshift at 70 panels is the most popular pick because it comfortably handles a fuller inventory without crowding.
Running out of setup time
Doors open at a set time whether you're ready or not. First-timers often lose their whole setup window fighting with tent poles, zip ties, or a grid system that doesn't quite fit together right. A kit that goes up in under 30 minutes with no tools means you're actually ready to greet your first customer instead of still assembling shelving while they're standing there.
Not thinking about lighting until it's too late
Convention hall lighting is rarely flattering. It's often harsh and direct, which can wash out colors and flatten artwork that looks amazing on your monitor at home. Frosted panels diffuse that light so your art reads true instead of glaring under fluorescents. It's a detail most first-timers don't think about until they see their own booth photos later and wonder why everything looks dull.
What's the single biggest first-timer mistake?
Skipping a real display system to save money upfront. It usually costs more in lost sales than it saves in dollars.
How do I pick the right kit size for my first show?
Match it to your inventory, not your budget alone. Core (24 panels) suits a lighter first table, Shapeshift (70 panels) is the most popular all-rounder, and Shapeshift Max (92 panels) suits vendors bringing a LOT of stock.
Is setup really doable solo before doors open?
Yes. A modular kit needs no tools and typically goes up in under 30 minutes, even solo.
If this is your first con, start with a proper modular display kit instead of piecing one together from scratch. Browse the full kit lineup to find the right size for your first show.
Why Your Signage Is Probably Too Small
Quick test. Stand six feet from your own booth and try to read your prices. Can't do it? Neither can the hundreds of people walking past you every hour. Small signage is one of those mistakes that feels harmless because YOU can always read it up close. The problem is nobody buys from up close. They decide whether to stop from across the aisle.
The sticky-note price tag
Handwritten prices on tiny sticky notes are everywhere in artist alley, and they're quietly costing sales. Attendees are moving fast and scanning a wall of visual noise. If your prices aren't legible at a glance, people either keep walking or awkwardly lean in and ask, which slows everything down and creates friction that just doesn't need to exist.
Your banner looks great but says nothing
A gorgeous logo banner is nice, but if it doesn't tell a stranger what you actually sell, it's not doing its job. "Prints, stickers, enamel pins" in bold letters above your table does more heavy lifting than another beautifully rendered character illustration. Save the character art for the table. Use the banner space to communicate FAST.
Signage placed too low to see
Even good signage fails if it's sitting flat on the table below eye level, buried behind a stack of prints. Attendees are scanning at standing height as they walk. Vertical panel structures give you natural spots at eye level to mount pricing and category signs where people will actually see them, instead of hoping someone glances down.
Inconsistent sizing across your whole booth
One big sign, three tiny ones, a QR code the size of a stamp. Inconsistent signage reads as unplanned, even if your art is incredible. A modular kit with a proper panel structure gives every sign a consistent, intentional spot, so the whole booth looks like it was designed as ONE thing instead of assembled last minute.
How big should artist alley price signs actually be?
Big enough to read from about six feet away without squinting. If you have to get close to read your own sign, it's too small.
Where's the best place to put signage on a booth?
At eye level, not flat on the table. A vertical panel structure gives you natural mounting spots that stay visible even when the table is busy.
Does bigger signage actually increase sales?
It increases the number of people who stop, which is the first step to any sale. You can't sell to someone who kept walking.
A structured setup gives your signage somewhere real to live. Check out a proper modular display kit with panels built for eye-level signage, and see the full kit lineup to find your size.
The Sagging Table Problem And How To Actually Fix It
We've all seen the table that's basically collapsing under a stack of prints. The middle bows, the corners lift, and by hour three the whole thing looks like it's giving up on life. Don't be that table. This is a fixable problem, and it's not about buying MORE stuff, it's about buying the RIGHT stuff.
Why tables sag in the first place
Standard folding tables are built for buffets, not for holding fifty stacked prints plus a cash box plus a laptop plus a wire rack on top. The weight isn't distributed, it's all pressing down on a thin panel with weak center support. Add a cheap grid on top that wasn't rated for real product weight, and you've basically built a slow-motion collapse into your own booth.
The wire grid is usually the real culprit
People blame the table, but a lot of the sag actually comes from an undersized wire grid bowing under prints that are too heavy for it, then pulling the whole setup forward. Wire grids are cheap for a reason. They're not built to hold real inventory weight over a full day, and once they start to bend they don't go back.
The actual fix: shelving rated for the load
This is where a real panel system earns its keep. Panels built correctly hold up to 5kg per shelf, so a stack of prints or a row of merch sits flat and level for the whole show, not just the first hour before the wobble sets in. It's not about adding more support to a bad system, it's about starting with a system that was designed to carry weight in the first place.
Match your kit size to your actual inventory
Sagging also happens when vendors try to cram a huge inventory onto a small setup. If you're consistently overloading your shelves, you probably need more panels, not more zip ties. The Core kit runs 24 panels for smaller setups, Shapeshift steps up to 46, Shapeshift Duo at 70 panels is the most popular for a reason, and Shapeshift Max goes up to 92 panels and can build up to 175cm tall. Pick the size that actually matches how much stock you carry.
How much weight can a properly built shelf actually hold?
Up to 5kg per shelf when the panels are assembled correctly. That covers stacked prints, sticker sheets, small merch, and more without bowing.
Will a bigger kit fix my sagging problem?
Only if the sagging is from overcrowding. If it's your table or grid that's the weak point, the fix is a properly rated shelving system, not just more panels.
How fast can I set up a sturdier display before doors open?
Under 30 minutes, no tools required. That's fast enough to swap your whole setup the morning of a con if you need to.
If your table has been sagging every show, it's worth looking at a proper modular display kit designed to hold real weight on a standard 180cm table.

Rating Real Artist Alley Setups: What Works And What Doesn't
Let's do the thing every artist alley YouTuber does eventually. Rating booths. Not to be mean, just to call out what's actually working versus what's held together with hope and washi tape. If you've ever scrolled through con photos and thought "why does that booth look so much better than mine" this is for you.
The A-tier setup: height, structure, breathing room
The booths that stop people mid-walk all share three things. Height variation so the eye has somewhere to travel. A structure that doesn't wobble when someone leans on the table. And actual negative space around the hero pieces. These booths usually run on a real system, something like a Shapeshift kit with 70 panels, which happens to be the most popular size because it hits that sweet spot between coverage and portability.
The C-tier setup: technically fine, forgettable
These booths aren't BROKEN, they're just flat. Literally. Everything sits at table height, prints are neat but undifferentiated, and there's no clear focal point. It's not a disaster, it just doesn't sell as hard as it could. A taller build, even just adding one tier of panels, fixes this instantly.
The F-tier setup: the collapsing table
You know this one. Wire grid tipping forward under the weight of prints, a corner of the tablecloth sliding off, stock stacked so high the bottom items are basically inaccessible. This happens because the shelving wasn't rated for real inventory. Panels built to spec hold up to 5kg per shelf, which is a night-and-day difference from a bargain grid that starts bowing after twenty prints.
The sneaky mistake even good booths make
Harsh, flat lighting. Even a genuinely well-built booth can make the art look dull under direct light with no diffusion. Frosted panels solve this by softening the light so colors read true instead of washed out or glaring. It's a small detail, but it's the difference between art that pops in photos and art that looks flat in person.
What actually separates a great booth from an average one?
Structure and height. Great booths use vertical space and a system that doesn't sag or wobble. Average booths are usually just flat tables with good product.
Is a taller display worth the extra setup time?
Yes, and with the right kit it barely costs you time. A modular kit sets up in under 30 minutes with no tools, so going taller doesn't mean showing up an hour earlier.
Do lighting mistakes really affect sales?
They affect how your art LOOKS, which affects whether someone stops walking. Flat, harsh light makes even great pieces look washed out.
If you're ready to move up a tier, check out a proper modular display kit that fits a standard 180cm table and actually holds real inventory.

The Booth Mistakes We See At Almost Every Con
Walk any artist alley for ten minutes and you'll spot the same problems over and over. Sagging tables. Tiny signage nobody can read from six feet away. Art crammed together so tight you can't tell where one piece ends and the next begins. None of these are hard to fix. Most vendors just don't know they're doing it until someone points it out. So let's point it out.
The wobbly, overloaded table
This is the classic. A folding table piled with prints, a rickety wire rack leaning at a weird angle, and a stack of stock that's one bump away from becoming an avalanche. It happens because most tables and grids just aren't built to hold real inventory weight, so vendors improvise with milk crates and hope. The fix is a display actually rated for the load. Panels built correctly hold up to 5kg per shelf, so your prints and merch sit flat and stay put through a full con day, not just the first hour.
Signage you need a magnifying glass to read
Your prices are in 12pt font on a sticky note. Your banner is gorgeous but says nothing about what you actually sell. Attendees are moving FAST through aisles, scanning dozens of booths a minute. If they can't read your sign from a few steps away, they keep walking. Bigger text, bolder contrast, and signage placed at eye level does more for your sales than another hour of Instagram promo.
No real structure, just tables and hope
A lot of first-time booths are basically a table, a tablecloth, and whatever grid system was cheapest on sale. It works for one con. Then the grid tips, the corners curl, and setup takes forty minutes you don't have before doors open. A proper modular display kit solves this because it's designed as a system, not a pile of separate parts. It sets up in under 30 minutes with no tools, which matters a lot when you're trying to grab coffee before the doors open.
Everything crammed onto one flat surface
Height sells. A table that's all flat surface reads as cluttered even when it's organized, because everything is competing at the same eye level. Vertical panels let you build up, not just out, so your best pieces get their own moment instead of getting lost in a pile.
How much weight can artist alley shelving actually hold?
Panels built correctly hold up to 5kg per shelf. That's enough for stacked prints, stickers, small merch, and the occasional art book without any sagging.
How long does setup actually take before a con?
A modular kit sets up in under 30 minutes with no tools required, which is the difference between a calm morning and a panicked one.
What's the most common booth mistake overall?
Overloading a table or grid that was never rated for the weight. It's the root cause behind sagging, tipping, and that slow slide into chaos by hour three.
If your setup is giving you any of these headaches, it might be time to look at a proper modular display kit built for exactly this job. You can also see the full kit lineup to find the size that fits your table and your inventory.
